On 11th July 2023, the European Parliament voted in favor of rejecting the EU COMM proposal on detailed production rules of organic sea salt and other salts for food and feed.
For EU-member states, in the absence of harmonized detailed organic production rules for salt, Article 21(2) of Regulation (EU) 2018/848 would apply, which means that organic salt operators may be certified as organic on the basis of the principles and the general production rules of Regulation (EU) 2018/848, and EU-member states have the possibility to apply detailed national production rules. National rules have to be communicated to the Commission in accordance with Directive (EU) 2015/1535 to ensure they are in line with Regulation (EU) 2018/848 and the Commission will assess them against the principles and the general rules of the organic legislation, therefore certain production techniques may remain prohibited.
